Opening up the Futures of AI in Health: Fabulation for Innovators

Hosts

Pedro Sanches, Assistant Professor and WASP-HS PI, Umeå University
Jason Tucker, Assistant Professor and WASP-HS PI, Malmö University

Summary

The workshop will provide a space to engage with a new tool kit. This toolkit is designed to expand the limited space for inclusive innovation in the future role of AI in health. It draws on research undertaken as part of our individual WASP-HS projects, as well as a collaborative engagement as part of the Nordic Fabulation Network (2023-2024), The Network was established to develop collaborative design via Fabulation to imagine and extend care practices in the Nordic context. It encourages broader forms of participation in society, building stronger connections among citizens, and ultimately fostering more resilient futures. It does so by drawing on Fabulation as a means for innovators to open up and craft more inclusive futures.

This is necessary as research on dominant future narratives of AI in health reveals that many of the key actors have very narrow and closely aligned socio-technical imaginaries. These imaginaries reflect current and emerging power relations and see public and private resources being funnelled into the realisation of certain futures. This not only limits innovative scope regarding how, where and even if certain AI driven technologies are applied in the future of health, but also narrows the scope and possibility to discuss counter hegemonic narratives. Lack of participation in the future of AI in health is a challenge for democracy. In addition, it also impacts our agency at an individual level regarding the interaction of our bodies and AI technology.

To counter this, during the workshop we will present and engage with this new toolkit which provides a range of methods to allow for the use of Fabulation to facilitate radically inclusive innovation for AI in health.

Aim

  • Introduce the participants to tools they can use to address the limited scope for innovative or inclusive future making in their fields.
  • Gain feedback on the toolkit, as part of an ongoing iterative process.

Call for participation

We are seeking a diverse group of participants working on AI in health (health being understood broadly i.e. societal, planetary health or care). We welcome those from both the private and public sector, and those at all stages in their career.

To register, send an email to jason.tucker@mau.se. To allow us to tailor the workshop, please include a short note on:

  1. Your area of work
  2. Brief reflections on narrow(ing) ideas of the future of AI in your field.
  3. A bio
