However\, this overlooks informal caregivers’ key role to current State budgetary deficits impacting healthcare services happening in Europe. As States increasingly rely on informal caregivers to provide care before the necessary involvement of healthcare services\, there is already well-established research on the growing care demands on informal caregivers. Yet\, in the development of AI-driven technologies\, little attention has been given to this group. To attend to this gap\, this thesis situates informal caregivers in order to reframe current developments of AI-driven technologies for care. \nThe aims of this thesis are therefore grounded in visibilising and situating informal caregivers within the development of AI-driven technologies. This is achieved in two ways: (1) by conducting interdisciplinary research on informal caregivers to bring forth the significance of critical social sciences in Human-Robot Interaction on health care as well at times Human-Computer Interaction; and\, (2) shedding light on current societal challenges on care regarding informal caregivers\, especially informal caregivers under the age of 18 (referred to as young carers)\, to the development of AI-driven technologies. The first aim is directed at the academic community\, whilst the second aim is directed towards society by empowering specific stakeholders in envisioned AI-driven technologies as artefacts. To answer to those aims\, a socio-legal STS theoretical lens is established\, to bring forth the power of law\, social norms\, plans and situated knowledge and care. \nThe findings are based on four scientific papers\, which report on HRI research practices on health care (Paper I)\, a theoretical framework to account for norms within adaptive technologies (Paper II)\, positioning young carers into AI-driven technologies (Paper III)\, and finally\, an empirical study on young carers’ perspectives of robots for care (Paper IV). These ultimately showcase that the development stage of this technology provides a pivotal opening to include informal caregivers\, ahead of deployment. This thesis offers hope on how to attend to an overlooked stakeholder\, namely informal caregivers. SUMMARY:Learning to do Research with AI: Towards Building a Toolkit to Support Doctoral Training

The toolkit will consist in a bespoke card-like game kit (called “the EDUCArds”). The cards design will take inspiration from the method material NOVA\, developed by Vinnova. These cards will be pilot-tested at the AI for Humanity and Society 2026 conference\, and then refined to produce a freely-available web-based resource. Running from 2026 to 2027\, the initiative brings together scholars from a range of disciplines to examine the broader transformations associated with the rapid development and deployment of artificial intelligence and autonomous systems across different global contexts. \nAs part of this series we are welcoming you to the open lecture “Human Futures\, Machine Pasts: Rethinking AI through Cultural Memory and Imagination” on May 27\, 2026. Keynote speaker is Anna Foka\, Professor of Digital Humanities\, Uppsala University \n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Abstract\nThe opening keynote explores how artificial intelligence is reshaping not only the way societies imagine the future but also how we understand the past and define humanity itself. Drawing from cultural heritage\, digital humanities\, and critical AI studies\, it argues that the technologies driving automation and prediction are deeply entangled with inherited cultural narratives\, biases\, and epistemologies. By tracing the historical continuities between past imaginaries of intelligence and today’s algorithmic systems\, the lecture highlights the need for interdisciplinary approaches that foreground ethics\, creativity\, and global diversity. DESCRIPTION:On 29 May 2026\, Appu Balachandran defends his doctoral thesis\, “The Development of Complex Intelligent Systems: A Study of Engineering and Project Management Approaches“\, at Linköping University. \nSee event page. \nAbstract\nAdvances in software and artificial intelligence (AI) are rapidly transforming society. Many of the systems that underpin everyday life\, such as aircraft\, vehicles\, energy systems\, and transportation infrastructure\, are complex technical systems that are becoming increasingly software-intensive. As these systems gain the ability to make decisions\, learn from data\, and adapt to their environment\, they evolve into what this thesis refers to as Complex Intelligent Systems (CoIS). \nThis thesis examines how the development of such systems is changing as software and AI grow in importance\, with a particular focus on engineering and project management approaches. Traditionally\, complex systems have been developed using systems engineering\, often supported by model-based approaches to ensure structured\, traceable\, and predictable development. At the same time\, development projects have typically been organized through phase-based Stage-Gate processes. \nHowever\, the growing integration of software and AI has led to the emergence of data-driven engineering approaches and more iterative and flexible agile practices. This thesis investigates how these different approaches interact in the development of CoIS. \nThe study is based on interviews with experts from the aviation\, automotive\, and naval industries\, complemented by an in-depth case study in the automotive domain. The findings show that the development of CoIS rarely involves replacing established approaches with new ones. Instead\, organizations need to combine multiple approaches simultaneously. Model-based approaches remain essential for safety-critical systems\, while data-driven and agile approaches are required to support learning and adaptability. This creates fundamental tensions between predictability and control on the one hand\, and learning and flexibility on the other. The thesis contributes to understanding these tensions by showing that it is not only merely a practical or methodological challenge\, but rooted in fundamentally different underlying logics of development embedded in the approaches used. \nThe results also highlight the role of system architecture as a key mechanism for managing this complexity. By structuring systems appropriately\, organizations can combine different development approaches without compromising safety or functionality. Overall\, the main challenge is not choosing a single approach\, but managing the interplay between multiple approaches across both the system and the organization. \nThis thesis contributes by providing an integrated perspective on the development of CoIS and by identifying the organizational and managerial challenges that arise when different development logics intersect. As significant uncertainties rattle the political economy of artmaking\, not all stakeholders feel their interests and concerns are equally recognised. At stake here are not only individual career prospects but the entire horizon of our envisioned cultural-technological futures.  \n\nThis dissertation examines artificial intelligence (AI) models in creative domains\, focusing on their emerging impact on the conditions and infrastructures of artistic work. It frames the transition of this socio-technical system as an instance of a broken world\, and extends Creative AI ethics beyond abstract principles towards the situated\, lived experiences of the various stakeholders involved: artists and music communities\, as well as developers and service providers of Creative AI applications. Grounded on critical analysis and ethics of care\, the dissertation explores the tensions and transitions practising artists experience in their working environments in the context of rapid AI proliferation\, and how AI development work practices could better support artists in navigating the rapidly changing socio-technical AI landscape.  \nDrawing on six empirical case studies\, the dissertation contributes\, first\, an analysis of the frictions and reconfigured conditions of artmaking\, as experienced by Nordic AI artists in the early 2020s. Second\, it introduces care ethics to the analysis of Creative AI and proposes sustained reflexive repair as a novel conceptual lens for managing disrupted cultural data relations in AI development. SUMMARY:Navigating Uncertain Futures – Sensemaking with AI in Complex System Planning
DESCRIPTION:Elinor Särner defends her doctoral thesis\, “Repairing Creative AI: Critical explorations of frictions\, reconfigurations\, and reflexivity“\, on June 5\, 2026\, at Linköping University. \nSee event page. \nAbstract\nTechnological development is an integral part of human life that both shape and is shaped by society. In today’s volatile society\, anticipating and interpreting emerging changes is crucial to face future challenges. The predictive abilities of Artificial Intelligence (AI) can support planning in such conditions. Yet AI adoption remains slow in sectors such as energy systems\, and urban development\, which are characterized by entangled dependencies\, critical social services\, and multiple involved actors and stakeholders\, making planning and management challenging. This thesis addresses key questions about how AI\, which relies on historical data\, can support future-oriented planning processes in such complex systems. From an innovation management point of view\, AI integration is organizationally challenging\, shaped by interacting internal and external dynamics – such as tasks\, workflows\, technical prerequisites\, and societal trends – calling for a holistic socio-technical perspective to ensure feasibility and desirability. \nThis thesis promotes “cooperative intelligence” emphasizing humans’ and AI’s reciprocal dependencies. AI-integration in complex system planning relies on collective sensemaking\, especially in the process of constructing meaning of potential futures and identifying possible actions to shape those futures. AI’s predictive ability can guide the navigation of uncertainty and ambiguity in this process and contribute as boundary objects in mediating meaning across domain and organizational boundaries. However\, it can also embed historic conditions and introduce new uncertainties. This duality calls for conscious involvement and negotiation among diverse actors. \nThis thesis sets out to explore how humans together with AI make sense of potential futures in complex system planning building on two empirical studies in the Swedish energy sector. The first study follows the development of an AI-prototype to assist planning of energy systems in new city districts. The second study investigates the implementation of an AI-tool to assess impacts of societal trends on the future energy system. \nThe thesis contributes to existing literature by informing how AI connects temporal dynamics of imagination and action in human-AI cooperation\, how it reconfigures cross-boundary collaboration\, develops the notion of intelligent boundary objects\, and how organizational structures need to evolve. Consequently\, a range of actors\, including states\, international organizations\, and non-state actors\, recognize AI as a critical domain for strategic competition and risk mitigation. While policymakers around the world grapple with the question of whether and how to regulate AI\, the focus of attention has recently shifted to the global level. Yet to date\, we lack systematic knowledge about the patterns and drivers of global AI governance. To that end\, this dissertation provides a systematic analysis of three areas of the governance process that hold considerable promise for deepening our understanding of the global governance of AI: actor preferences\, bargaining dynamics\, and institutional design. Through four independent papers\, this dissertation makes substantive theoretical and empirical contributions to address shortcomings in prior research.  \nTheoretically\, it develops novel and testable arguments about the global governance of AI. Empirically\, it spearheads a comprehensive analysis of global AI governance through large-scale data collection efforts for each of the singular papers\, utilizing various methods for descriptive and explanatory analysis. The dissertation finds that global AI governance is characterized by three core patterns: heterogeneous actors\, institutional fragmentation\, and a predominance of non-binding rules. Two factors emerge consistently across the papers as drivers of these patterns: divergence of interests among relevant actors and uncertainty about AI. These models are now globally utilized for knowledge and content organization and synthesis. DESCRIPTION:On 28 August 2026\, Rachael Garrett defends her doctoral thesis\, “Somatic Freedoms: Reconfiguring Human-Machine Ethical Relations“\, at KTH Royal Institute of Technology. \nSee event. \nAbstract\nSomatic freedoms are ethical commitments to bodies as whole\, living and corporeal subjectivities within processes of research and design. They view ethical sensibilities as grounded in our bodies and felt experiences\, and intimately shaped by our interpersonal\, socio-cultural\, and political relations. This position argues that embodied ethical knowledge is implicit in many aspects of research and design practice\, as well as our interactions with machines. I explore felt experiences of ethics across three multidisciplinary art and design collaborations: (i) Robots\, Dance\, Different Bodies\, (ii) Embrace Angels\, and (iii) How to Train Your Drone. Across these projects\, I investigate how misalignments between ethical sensibilities can invite deeper modes of allyship; how frictions between sensibilities can be engaged to forge bridges between interdisciplinary practitioners; how sensibilities are practiced within human-machine interactions; and how we might design machines that can support bodies in uncovering potential pathways to ethical transformation. \nAcross these projects\, I chart the development of somatic freedoms as ethical commitments to bodies and the vibrant\, material and corporeal pursuit of change and transformation. These are commitments to creating conditions in which transformation is supported\, enhancing the possibilities available to bodies to achieve change\, facilitating the processes through which bodies transform their relations with the world\, and by extension\, change how they are constituted within those relations. My papers demonstrate processes of human-machine ethical reconfiguration: the ongoing reorganisation of relations between bodies and machines through which ethical transformation can be realised. These processes require traversing the boundaries of our bodies within our relational engagements with the world around us\, experiencing ourselves as subjects who move but also objects that are moved within those encounters. DESCRIPTION:Petra Jääskeläinen defends her doctoral thesis\, “More-than-Human Re-Imaginaries of Creative AI: Ontological and Aesthetic Re-Designings“\, on 4 September 2026\, at KTH Royal Institute of Technology. \nSee event. \nAbstract\nIn this doctoral dissertation\, I explored what design knowledge(s) could facilitate bringing More-than-Human (MTH) commitments into the design of Creative AI technology. The work is theoretically aligned with more-than-human feminist posthumanities\, and frames MTH design as an emerging and alternative design paradigm to predominant human-centred design approaches in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). The central contribution is more-than-human re-imaginaries\, an approach which aims at re-configuring the design practices of Creative AI towards alternative ontologies and aesthetics by examining imaginaries. The imaginaries are materialized through methods\, such as fabulation\, sketching\, and speculative prototyping\, across five design cases. More concretely\, the dissertation introduces three critiques of current design practices in Creative AI that do not support MTH design: 1) human-centred conceptualization of creativity\, 2) rationalist conceptualization of ecological relations\, and 3) values of self-interest that are embedded through human-centred design practices. It also provides seven pathways for ontological and aesthetic more-than-human re-designing of Creative AI: 1) more-than-human conceptualization of creativity\, 2) cultivating more-than-human aligned values\, 3) situated designs in specific ecologies\, 4) embodied more-than-human care\, 5) nonhuman cultural practices\, 6) more-than-human visual aesthetics\, and 7) more-than-human data practices. These seven pathways are contributed as directions for further design inquiry within MTH Creative AI. DESCRIPTION:On 17 September 2026\, Mafalda Samuelsson Gamboa defends her doctoral thesis\, “Design Sensibilities: Corporeal Theories as Embodied Epistemology for Design Research“\, at Chalmers University of Technology. \nSee event. \nAbstract\nStarting with a seemingly bounded design brief—studying and designing social drones—this thesis gradually opens into an inquiry into how design knowledge forms those who practice it. Rather than treating design as a neutral means of intervention\, the work attends to design sensibilities: the embodied\, relational orientations through which designers come to perceive\, act\, and live in the world. These sensibilities operate as corporeal theories; becoming a skin that accumulates\, hardens\, softens\, and is shed over time. \nTheory is often treated as something we apply to practice\, or extract from it after the fact. Here\, there is a different premise: that theory within design is already being made in the fostering of sensibilities. I argue that attending to and articulating sensibilities as a form of intermediate-level knowledge allows us to understand it not only as abstraction\, but as something that transforms bodies\, relationships\, and ways of being in practice. Through first-person methods\, longitudinal autoethnography\, and material making\, the work traces a shift from naïve engagement to critical disillusionment\, and onward to a reconfiguration of what it might mean to practice and theorise design otherwise. As the research moves with its time—through intensifying technological concentration exemplified by the case of drones—it bears witness to where imagination feels institutionally and intentionally foreclosed. Rather than smoothing over these ruptures\, the thesis centres them as sites where design theory is remade through corporeality rather than represented as a lens. \nThe dissertation is a non-linear constellation of collaborative experiments\, including pictorials\, critiques\, and co-authored texts and designs structured in three chapters. The first focuses on refusing the inevitability of drones\, the second describes design epistemology as sensibilities\, and the third opens paths forward for design as an implication from a turn to sensibilities. This compositional choice resists the primacy of individual authorship and challenges academic norms that locate rigour in separation between theory and practice\, researcher and subject\, or singular voice and collective inquiry. I discuss co-constructed relational knowing not only through artefacts or arguments and shared attentiveness through reflexive and diffractive thinking and making. At its core\, this thesis argues for an expanded understanding of designerly knowledge: one that takes seriously how design epistemologies act upon designers themselves. It joins conversations on design otherwise and on making trouble\, proposing that withdrawal\, instigation\, refusal\, and pauses in making are not endpoints but part of a broader repertoire of design actions in grave need of a collective stance. Design practice unfolds alongside social\, political\, and ecological rupture\, coming to terms with its impossibility under the violence of capitalism. By articulating sensibilities as both knowledge outcome and method\, the thesis invites a rethinking of design research as a practice of becoming: with others\, attuned to the collective sensibilities required to navigate worlds that are increasingly difficult to design within. DESCRIPTION:Bijona Troqe defends her doctoral thesis\, “Human-AI Decision-Making: A Phenomenon-Driven Study in Personalized Medicine“\, at Linköping University on September 22. \nSee event. \nAbstract\nArtificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly being integrated into organizational decision-making\, creating new forms of human-AI collaboration. Yet\, little is known about how human-AI decision-making unfolds in practice\, particularly in complex contexts such as personalized medicine. \nThis thesis explores human-AI decision-making as an organizational process situated in complex contexts. Using a phenomenon-driven approach and embedded case studies from personalized medicine and data-driven healthcare in Sweden\, it examines how humans and AI jointly shape decision-making. \nThe findings contribute to a multi-level understanding of human-AI decision-making that moves beyond viewing AI as a decision support tool. At the organizational level\, AI reshapes attention\, search processes\, decision premises and routines. At the interactional level\, AI becomes meaningful through ongoing sensemaking as actors interpret its outputs and incorporate them into organizational action. At the individual level\, AI transforms how professional judgment is formed\, exercised\, and legitimized\, while its outputs are interpreted through existing professional and organizational frames. \nOverall\, the thesis shows that human-AI decision-making is distributed\, situated\, and context dependent. DESCRIPTION:Johanna Velander defends her doctoral thesis\, “AI in Educational Practice: Designing for Critical AI Literacy“\, at Linnaeus University on September 25. \nSee event. \nAbstract\nArtificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly embedded in educational practice\, yet AI literacy is often defined through predefined competencies that say less about how it is understood\, enacted\, and shaped in specific contexts. This research investigates how AI literacy is conceptualised in research and policy\, understood by teachers\, enacted through interaction with generative AI (GenAI)\, and used to inform the design of educational GenAI systems that support reflective and critical engagement. \nThe methodology combines Emergent Research Design structured with Design Research Methodology. This allows the research focus to develop in response to empirical findings\, methodological insights\, and rapid changes in the educational AI landscape\, while maintaining a coherent progression from problem clarification and descriptive inquiry towards exploratory design-oriented knowledge. Adopting a practice-oriented perspective\, the thesis synthesises conceptual\, empirical\, interactional\, and design-oriented inquiry across eight studies. \nFindings show that AI literacy is frequently framed in operational and competency-oriented terms\, while sociotechnical\, critical\, and agentive dimensions remain less developed. Teachers’ understandings of AI are often shaped by fragmented and informal learning\, although their concerns extend to trust\, responsibility\, authorship\, bias\, and pedagogical judgement. Technical understanding does not automatically lead to broader sociotechnical reasoning\, and recognising AI-related risks is not equivalent to acting critically in practice. Teacher–GenAI interaction reveals AI literacy as situated and relational: it becomes visible through how teachers delegate tasks\, interpret and adapt outputs\, question suggestions\, exercise judgement\, and negotiate responsibility. \nThe thesis further argues that literacy is increasingly bound up with machine processes. Meaning-making\, knowledge production\, and pedagogical action are no longer exclusively human activities but emerge through relations among teachers\, learners\, AI systems\, infrastructures\, and institutional conditions. This resonates with critical posthumanist accounts of literacy and shifts attention from what individuals know about AI to how humans and non-humans jointly shape what can be known and done. \nSupporting critical AI literacy therefore requires attention to both education and design. Educational GenAI systems should be evaluated not only for accuracy\, usability\, and efficiency\, but also for whether they support reflection\, surface uncertainties and question assumptions. DESCRIPTION:Leila Methnani defends her doctoral thesis\, “Navigating the Sociotechnical Gap in Explainable Artificial Intelligence“\, at Umeå University on 2 October. \nSee event. \nAbstract\nAs Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions become increasingly embedded in society and across industries\, demands for explainability and transparency of AI decision-making have intensified. Much progress has been made in developing the technical aspects of eXplainable AI (XAI) solutions\, but the social and interactive aspects remain underexplored. This thesis aims to identify and investigate ways forward for XAI as a sociotechnical system—where the social and technical components are recognised as tightly coupled. We propose tools for navigating the sociotechnical gap that arises when technical XAI solutions do not meet the social requirements in demand. Through a combination of empirical (user-centred design\, focus groups)\, computational (argumentation-based reasoning)\, and critical methods\, we examine how explainability can (or cannot) be operationalised depending on contextual and social needs. \nIn our structured review of the Variable Autonomy Robotics literature—an AI subfield where interactivity is key—we find that approaches to explainability and transparency require consideration for the overall human-AI teaming mission as an entry point. The distinct challenges around control and trust in each human-AI teaming effort revealed the importance of operationalising how to explain by breaking down contextual information: who is in need of an explanation\, what do they need explained and why? These are design decisions of interactive solutions that can benefit greatly from interdisciplinary efforts\, especially as XAI moves towards a more human-centric discipline. \nOur interdisciplinary work shows how counterfactual explanations can support the explainability needs of operators in the process industries through the development of an interactive dashboard. While contextual inquiry proved to be valuable in our synthesis of explainee requirements and explainer selection\, we also propose a way to formalise explainer choice with computational argumentation. We find that the transparency afforded by computational argumentation techniques supports navigation of the sociotechnical gap by ensuring XAI is also designed with visible seams as per seamful design. \nClarifying boundaries (seams) of these systems for relevant stakeholders involves crafting relevant metrics for evaluating XAI as a sociotechnical discipline. Comparisons between common quantitative metrics for evaluating counterfactuals and Grice’s maxims of conversation—a popular conversational model from the study of pragmatics in linguistics—reveal a loose relationship\, but one that fails to capture contextual and social complexities. This is a gap that we frame as a broader technosolutionist tendency in our critique of an adjacent topic: AI safety and the technocentric view of how to achieve alignment. Inom denna seminarieserie lyfter vi frågor som rör AI och autonoma systems påverkan på välfärden. \nAI-omställningen sker i hög grad genom AI-baserade informationssystem som integreras i verksamheternas arbets- och beslutsprocesser. Den påverkar hur information skapas\, lagras\, söks och omsätts i beslut. Samtidigt skapar beroendet av externa leverantörer nya sårbarheter och väcker frågor om hur krav på rättssäkerhet\, transparens\, arkivering\, insyn och dataskydd kan upprätthållas när informationshanteringen sker i system utanför den offentliga organisationens direkta kontroll. Utmaningen är därför inte bara teknisk och juridisk\, utan också organisatorisk och kompetensmässig.
