Virginia Dignum Awarded AI Ethics Professional of the Year

Virginia Dignum, Program Director of WASP-HS, Professor in Responsible AI, Umeå University, is winner of the 2022 Nordic DAIR Award category ‘AI Ethics Professional of the Year’ 2022.

Last week, it was announced that Virginia Dignum, WASP-HS Program Director and Professor in Responsible AI at Umeå University, has been named the Nordic DAIR Award winner in the category of AI Ethics Professional of the Year.

“I am delighted and honoured to win the Nordic DAIR award in the category AI Ethics Professonal of the Year 2022. It is not only a recognition of what I and my group have achieved in this field, but above all, it shows the importance of a responsible and ethical approach to the development and use of artificial intelligence”, says Virginia Dignum.

A number of academics and professionals were nominated and there was an open vote this autumn to decide who would take home the title.

“I would also like to congratulate the other nominees, a very deserving group of professionals from academia, the public and private sectors. It is a privilege for me to be among my peers,” continues Viginia Dignum.

Active in Several AI Initiatives

In addition to being the Program Director of WASP-HS, Virginia Dignum is also active in several international initiatives on policy and strategy for AI research and applications. In particular, she is a member of the Global Partnership on AI (GPAI), the High-Level Expert Group on the Implementation of the Recommendation of UNESCO, the World Economic Forum Council on AI, the IEEE Global Initiative on Ethically Aligned Design of Autonomous and Intelligent Systems and more.
