Workshop in Responsible Learning Analytics

Published: January 29, 2021

An interactive workshop that aims to provide focused discussions on ethics in Learning Analytics (LA) systems is organized by researchers that also are active in WASP-HS.

The workshop Responsible Learning Analytics, refer to the need to create LA systems that are just and ethical but also that consider equity, democratic and solidarity in education.

Ethical considerations and the values embedded in the design, development, deployment, and use of Learning Analytics (LA) systems have received considerable attention in recent years. Ethical frameworks, design guidelines, principles, checklists, and a code of practice have contributed a conceptual basis for focused discussions on ethics in LA. However, relatively little is known about how these different conceptual understandings of ethics work in practice and what specific tensions practitioners (e.g., administrators, developers, researchers, teachers, learners) experience when designing, deploying, or using LA with care.

One of the organizers of the workshop is Teresa Cerratto Pargman, Stockholm University, associate professor of Human-computer interaction, and principal investigator of the WASP-HS funded project “Ethical and Legal Challenges in Relationship to AI-driven Practices in Higher Education”.

Cormac McGrath, member of the same project and associate professor at Stockholm University, is also taking part as organizer of the workshop, as well as Olga Viberg, Associate Professor at Royal institute of technology, and member of the WASP-HS project “Culturally Informed Robots in Learning Activities (CIRILA)”.

The virtual workshop is scheduled 12 April, 2021. Submission deadline is 9 February, 2021.

The organizers also welcome participants interested in attending and participating in the discussions (without submitting position papers).
