New Book Release: The AI Paradox by Virginia Dignum

Published: March 4, 2026

It is not about what artificial intelligence (AI) will do to us, but about how we choose to shape it, argues Virginia Dignum, Professor in Responsible AI at Umeå University, in her new book “The AI Paradox: How to Make Sense of a Complex Future”. The book is out now and a signing event is scheduled for 26 April at Bildmuseet in Umeå.

AI is increasingly part of everyday life, from public services to education and working life. It is also surrounded by strong claims about what it will change, and how fast. In her new book “The AI Paradox”, Virginia Dignum, Professor of Responsible AI at Umeå University, offers a clear perspective on how we talk about, and govern, AI.

“AI is not something that happens to us. It is something we shape; through policy, education, markets, and everyday choices. The conversation about AI should not be left to engineers or tech companies alone,” Virginia says.

The technology  is not an autonomous force beyond human control. We build it. We regulate it. We adopt it and make it part of daily life. Responsibility, therefore, does not rest only with engineers or technology companies. It concerns all of us.

Stronger Bridges Between Technology and Ethics

By linking technological detail to societal impact, the book offers tools for more informed and grounded discussions about AI policy and governance. It challenges the idea that AI development is inevitable or purely technology-driven. Instead, it encourages readers to ask clear questions: Who benefits? Who carries the risks? Who decides?

“I hope the book is read by educators, journalists, and business leaders, but also by students and engaged citizens. In particular, I would like decision-makers to read it. Too often, AI governance is discussed either in very technical language or in abstract ethical terms,” Virginia says.

A central message in The AI Paradox is that debates on AI governance are often split in two. On one side are highly technical discussions about system design and performance. On the other are abstract ethical principles, sometimes far removed from practice.

“We need more bridges between those worlds. If the book helps even a few readers feel more confident in questioning dominant assumptions about AI, then it has achieved its aim,” says Virginia.
