What challenges does the welfare sector face in a world with artificial intelligence (AI)? The WASP-HS Collaboration Arena Welfare was inaugurated with a kick-off event at Piperska Muren in Stockholm on 2 September. The new arena provides a platform for dialogue and collaboration with the aim of strengthening society’s ability to navigate AI’s impact on welfare.

“The pace of change due to AI means that we all have a role to play. In this time of profound societal transformation, we must speak with one another, not past one another or about one another,” says Anna-Sara Lind, Professor of Public Law at Uppsala University.

Advancing AI research grounded in real-world welfare sector challenges is the core aim of the WASP-HS Collaboration Arena Welfare. Launched on 1 September and inaugurated the following day at Piperska Muren in Stockholm, the arena brought together representatives from public authorities, academia, and civil society. Through panel and roundtable discussions, participants exchanged insights, explored common challenges, and identified opportunities for long-term collaboration.

”Although our organisations have different missions, it has been made clear today that we are facing similar challenges, through this initiative we can join forces and learn from each other,” says Anana Postoaca at the Swedish Police Authority.

The importance of the platform provided by the collaboration arena was highlighted in several conversations throughout the day.

“It is incredibly important to have a platform where we can meet and exchange ideas. WASP-HS Collaboration Arena Welfare plays a vital role in this regard, enabling us as a government agency to engage with researchers and gain new insights and perspectives,” says Per Nydén at Integritetsskyddsmyndigheten (the Swedish Authority for Privacy Protection).

Keeping the Conversation Going

To keep the conversation on AI and welfare between academia and public authorities alive the WASP-HS Collaboration Arena Welfare hosts the new seminar series “WASP-HS Fredag: När AI möter välfärden”. On a biweekly basis, the online seminars tackle different aspects of AI and welfare and welcomes all interested to join and participate.
