Virginia Dignum elected to the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences

Virginia Dignum, Program director of WASP-HS, is one of the top names as the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA) strengthens its competence and know-how when 42 new members are elected.

Virginia Dignum takes a seat in IVA’s Department of Information Technology, which deals with issues in computer science, information technology and telecommunications, as well as its applications and significance for societal development.

“It is an amazing and unexpected honour to be elected to IVA! I am humbled by this recognition by the Swedish engineering community and hope to be able to contribute to the aims of the academy, bringing technology to the service of humanity, in a responsible and trustworthy way,” says Virginia Dignum.

New members are elected once a year to the prestigious list. IVA gathers knowledge and expertise from 1300 elected Swedish and international Fellows.

“IVA’s task is to improve society by promoting technical and economic sciences and the development of business. Knowledgeable and competent members are a prerequisite for fulfilling the academy’s purpose. The newly elected members, top names in the corporate world and recognized researchers, are a fantastic resource for the academy,” says Tuula Teeri, CEO of IVA.

Professor of Social and Ethical Artificial Intelligence

Virginia Dignum is Professor of Social and Ethical Artificial Intelligence at Umeå University and associated with the TU Delft in the Netherlands. She is the program director of She is the program director for the national research program WASP-HS, the Wallenberg Program on Humanities and Society for AI, Autonomous Systems and Software. She is a Fellow of the European Artificial Intelligence Association (EURAI), a member of the European Commission High Level Expert Group on Artificial Intelligence, of the World Economic Forum’s Global Artificial Intelligence Council, of the Executive Committee of the IEEE Initiative on Ethically Aligned Design, and a founding member of ALLAI-NL, the Dutch AI Alliance.

She is the author of “Responsible Artificial Intelligence: developing and using AI in a responsible way” – published by Springer in 2019. She has a PHD in Artificial Intelligence in 2004, from Utrecht University and she was awarded the prestigious Veni grant by the NWO (Dutch Organization for Scientific Research) in 2006.
