Is artificial intelligence (AI) used for the right reasons within teacher education? Cormac McGrath, Teresa Cerratto-Pargman and Linnéa Stenliden are studying the mediating role of AI in teacher education.
A new special issue of Teaching Education highlights the central role of researchers and teacher educators continuously reflecting on the purpose of teacher education.
“The special issue illustrates, through seven papers from across the world, how AI is being encountered, negotiated, and contested within teacher education and related educational settings,” say the authors.
Cormac McGrath, Teresa Cerratto-Pargman and Linnéa Stenliden found a set of four common issues across the studied papers:
- Prioritizing tools over outcomes – Are we using AI for the sake of using the technology rather than asking what we wish to achieve?
- Surface level performance over deep cognitive engagement – Are teacher students learning long term or just for the sake of scoring on a test?
- Reconsidering knowledge and professional identity – What is education really for in a world with AI?
- AI as governance – What are different stakeholders’ perspectives on new technologies and how does past events influence these conversations?
