Virginia Dignum, WASP-HS researcher and professor of responsible artificial intelligence (AI) at Umeå University, is awarded the 2026 Nordic DAIR Data Innovation Summit “Lifetime Achievement in AI” award.
The award was presented last week at the Nordic DAIR Data Innovation Summit in Stockholm in recognition of the profound impact Dignum’s work has had on shaping both the ethical and technical landscape of AI. It specifically acknowledges her contributions to advancing AI maturity in the Nordic region, as well as her enduring commitment to mentoring the next generation of practitioners.
“This award is a fantastic surprise while it is also a reminder that there is still a great deal to do, and so little time to do it in this fast-paced world,” says Virginia Dignum.
Industry Recognition Signals Progress
While honored by the prestigious award, Virginia remains convinced that there is still more work ahead. She views the recognition as a positive sign that these achievements are being acknowledged by the industry.
“I am particularly pleased that this recognition comes from the industry – the very practitioners that responsible AI efforts are ultimately directed at. It signals that the importance of getting AI right is understood and valued beyond academic circles, and that matters enormously,” she says.

Developing a Rigorous Scientific Basis
Developing AI in a responsible way is not possible without a strong scientific foundation. Virginia Dignum emphasizes its critical importance and the urgency of advancing this work.
“This also confirms the importance and urgency of developing a rigorous scientific basis for responsible AI and AI governance. Not just principles and frameworks, but grounded, operational approaches that hold up in practice and are based on proper scientific methods and theories.”
Virginia focuses on the importance of AIs functionality and accuracy in practice.
“We must design responsible AI frameworks, tools and metrics and also be able to prove that they are sound and correct”
Virginia Dignum is currently Director of the AI Policy Lab at Umeå University.
