Discussions on How EU Regulations Shape AI and Society

Published: May 8, 2025

How does the European Union’s (EU) regulatory landscape shape societal development, innovation and competitiveness? On April 29, 2025, WASP-HS welcomed over 60 participants from academia, government, and industry to the Confederation of Swedish Enterprise in Stockholm to discuss regulations concerning artificial intelligence (AI) and its effects.

Over the past decade, the EU has introduced a range of laws shaping how technology is developed and used, aiming to protect fundamental rights while promoting both public and commercial interests. Regulations like the GDPR, AI Act, and Data Act now affect all sectors, as Europe navigates between increasing regulation and the need for competitiveness in a rapidly evolving tech landscape.

WASP-HS welcomed over 60 participants to the dialogue meeting “Perspectives on AI Law in Practice — A New Regulatory Reality?”, at the Confederation of Swedish Enterprise on April 29, to discuss issues arising due to the new regulations.

The event started with a keynote by Patrick Joyce, Chief Economist at Almega, who spoke about competitiveness and how AI affects worker efficiency. Thereafter, Andreas Kotsios, Associate Professor at the Department of Business Studies, Uppsala University, held a keynote on how Europe’s rights-based legal tradition is shaping AI policy.

Participants then gathered in groups to explore how the regulatory landscape shapes societal development, innovation, and competitiveness. They discussed potential challenges posed by AI regulations and what measures are needed to support innovation while protecting the public interest.

The event concluded with a panel discussion moderated by Carolina Brånby, Director of Digital Policy at the Confederation of Swedish Enterprise. The panel featured the following panelists:

  • Malou Larsson Klevhill, Associate Professor of Civil Law at Uppsala University
  • David Törngren, Chief Legal Counsel at the Swedish Authority for Privacy Protection (Integritetsskyddsmyndigheten)
  • Sofia Edvardsen, Founder of Sharp Cookie Advisors
  • Helena Eriksvik, Chief Privacy Officer at Ericsson
