Conference: Digital Sovereignty in the Age of AI

As AI systems increasingly mediate access to information, public services, markets, and social interaction, questions of digital sovereignty move to the centre of legal and political debates. For the EU and Sweden, digital sovereignty is not merely about technological independence; it is about preserving fundamental rights, democratic self-determination, and the rule of law in an AI-driven society while remaining globally interconnected and innovation-friendly.
European societies rely heavily on digital infrastructures, data flows, and AI technologies developed and operated across borders. This dependence raises critical questions: Who controls the data, algorithms, and standards shaping social and economic life? How can the EU’s legal framework protect individual autonomy while enabling collective governance and competitiveness? And how can Europe assert regulatory influence without reinforcing fragmentation or digital protectionism?
These questions are at the core of a conference organized within the WASP-HS Research Environment “The Rule of AI” that will provide an interdisciplinary forum to examine how digital sovereignty can be meaningfully conceptualised and operationalised in the age of AI – across individual, institutional, and global dimensions.
